Raised under the guidance of his parents, Gary and Debbie Lawson—both dedicated evangelistic ministers—Joel grew up immersed in the church, where the rich, soul-stirring rhythms of worship music shaped his earliest memories. His natural musical talent declared itself remarkably early; at just three years old, he took up the drumsticks and began beating out his very first rhythms, sparking a lifelong journey as a multi-instrumentalist.
